Union Day is a political achievement and a social and economic reality

Union Day represents both a political achievement and a social and economic reality for the United Arab Emirates. It was not simply a gift or a granted privilege, but rather a result of diligent efforts and the vision of its founding fathers. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan played a pivotal role in promoting the importance of the union, and with the collective efforts of the rulers of the Emirates, the union was declared on December 2, 1971.

The United Arab Emirates initially comprised six emirates, with the seventh emirate later joining. Sheikh Zayed became the first president of the united seven emirates, which included Abu Dhabi as the capital, along with Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. During Sheikh Zayed’s forty-year rule, the Emirates experienced rapid development, leading to numerous achievements and enhancing the country’s reputation domestically and internationally.

Following Sheikh Zayed’s era, leadership was assumed by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, supported by the members of the Supreme Council, the rulers of the Emirates, and the Crown Princes. They continued on the path set by Sheikh Zayed, prioritizing progress and development. They proved to be worthy successors to a visionary leader.

Since December 2, 1971, the people and residents of the United Arab Emirates celebrate UAE National Day, a day of joy and pride. Schools and companies are typically closed, and the streets are adorned with festivities. This day marks a significant turning point that has elevated the Emirates’ reputation through its remarkable development and achievements.

The UAE has become an exemplar of coexistence, cultural exchange, job opportunities, and the enactment of laws that serve both citizens and expatriates. Disputes are resolved impartially and independently, highlighting the country’s commitment to the rule of law.

Union Day is a testament to the UAE’s success in building a united and prosperous nation, and it serves as a reminder of the values of respect, tolerance, and progress that have shaped the country’s journey.

The UAE has made significant strides in diversifying its economy and reducing its reliance on natural resources. The country has focused on the production of dairy products, vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, and eggs, among others. Additionally, it has undertaken massive tourism projects to attract visitors worldwide.

Dubai, in particular, has achieved notable milestones. It is home to Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, symbolizing the city’s ambition and architectural prowess. Dubai also boasts the Jebel Ali Free Zone, a thriving economic zone that attracts investments and promotes business activities. Moreover, Dubai is recognized as the largest gold market globally, contributing to its status as a global business hub.

The UAE has gained prominence for having the highest percentage of wealthy individuals in the world, reflecting the country’s prosperity and economic opportunities.

The founders of the UAE Federation played crucial roles in establishing the nation:

  1. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan: President of the United Arab Emirates and a key founder of the Federation.
  2. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum: Vice President of the United Arab Emirates.
  3. Sheikh Khalid bin Muhammad Al Qasimi: Ruler of Sharjah.
  4. Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi: Ruler of Ajman.
  5. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Mualla: Ruler of Umm Al Quwain.
  6. Sheikh Saqr bin Muhammad Al Qasimi: Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
  7. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi: Ruler of Fujairah.

The Federal National Council (FNC) has played a significant role in the UAE’s governance and development. Since its establishment, the FNC has focused on sustainable development and facilitating a strong relationship between federal authorities. It actively participates in discussions and approves legislation, addresses citizen issues and needs, enhances executive bodies’ effectiveness, and promotes investment in human development, infrastructure, and political participation mechanisms.

During the third regular session of the sixteenth legislative term, the FNC collaborated with the government to achieve positive outcomes in serving the nation and its citizens. The Council discussed and approved numerous draft federal laws across various fields, addressing a total of sixty questions during this session. The government provided responses to all questions, with fifty-three answered in writing and seven addressed orally. The FNC also deliberated on ten general issues and issued recommendations, totaling to one hundred and thirteen recommendations.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God have mercy on him) expressed his views on democracy, stating:

“We have experienced the democratic approach in reality for hundreds of years through the principle of Shura. We aim to further enhance this experience and learn from the experiences of our brothers who have gone through similar circumstances.”
